Kayaking
The many bays on Whangarei Heads have easy access for kayaks. Pacific Coast Kayaks ,locally based in Onerahi, have a variety of
guided expeditions in both the Inner and Outer Harbour areas. Hiring, freedom hires, guided trips and instruction are all offered.
Mark Garry ( owner-operator) is a fully qualified sea kayak guide and the S.K.A.O.N.Z code of practice is followed for our operation.

All levels or experience are catered for. Family groups are welcome and discounts are be available for children under 12 accommpanied
by two adults
Where to paddle:
- In the Inner harbour lies Matakohe Island which has a long history of Maori and European occupation and where you can explore the old cement works ruins, Maori middens and pa site. Kiwis have now been introduced to the island. Nearby is a marine reserve at Waikaraka ( mangrove forest area ).
- Parua Bay is a safe area to paddle and has its own island pa site at Motukiore near Manganese Point.
- Further out is another marine reserve at Motukaroro Island near Reotahi Snorkeling may be an option for this and any of our tours.
- For the more adventurous and weather permitting Pacific Coast kayaks offers tours to Smugglers Cove and beyond to Peach Cove and Guano Island (Ocean Beach).
- Tours are also available at Pataua and Taiharuru both in the estuary and on the open ocean. Fishing can be an option on these trips. Please enquire.
Multi day trips are available. We are a mobile operation and go as far north as the Bay of Islands, Cavalli Islands and Whangaroa Harbour.

To Make A Booking:
Please book ahead so we can take account of weather, tide and plan safely to match the fitness and experience of the group. Minimum group size is two.
The best time in peak season is to ring in the evening as we may be out on the water during the day and sometimes cellphone cover is variable.
