Kayaking
The many bays on Whangarei Heads have easy access for kayaks. Several of the accommodation providers have waterfront access, and offer use of their kayaks to guests.
If you do not have your own, you need not worry because Pacific Coast Kayaks ,locally based in Onerahi, are able to do guided expeditions in both the Inner and Outer Harbour areas where there is great variety. In the Inner harbour lies Matakohe Island which has a long history of Maori and European occupation and where you can explore the old cement works ruins, Maori middens and pa site. Kiwis have now been introduced to the island. Nearby is a marine reserve at Waikaraka ( mangrove forest area ). Further out is another marine reserve at Motukaroro Island near Reotahi which is interesting to snorkel.
Hiring, freedom hires, guided trips and instruction are all offered.
