Parua Bay Tavern

The historic Parua Bay Tavern is absolute waterfront with unobstructed views of Mt Manaia and Mt Aubrey and the beautiful Whangarei Harbour.

A wide range of food is available with the menu now including Stonegrill, the new healthy way to eat. The recently finished upstairs function room is now available for bookings such as weddings, conferences and parties. The area can accommodate approximately 100 persons seated.

The Tavern has four big screens for rugby, Sky TV and to play the 10,000 music video clips on offer. There are also pool tables and pokies.

Quiz nights are on Tuesday from 7pm - 9pm. Come along and join in on the fun.

Should you wish to arrive by boat you are more than welcome to tie up to the Tavern's Jetty please note however that you must take the tide into consideration.

The Deck Café,

Reotahi Road, McLeod Bay

Driving along Whangarei Heads Road towards Ocean Beach you will find the beautifully situated Deck Café, on a hilltop with a wonderful view over McLeod Bay, in the shadow of nearby volcanic peaks of Mount Manaia and Mount Aubrey.

The cafe is ideally placed for the many activities available on Whangarei Heads.

Whether you are  going to:

  • Walk The Walks (any of them, there are many to choose from!),
  • Enjoy a fishing trip,
  • Spend time at the beach, (the spectacular Ocean  beach surfer paradise is just 10 minutes drive away.)
  • Simply relax and take a sightseeing trip around ‘The Heads’

This is an ideal spot to enjoy a meal, a snack, or a delicious ice cream.

The fact that it has so many regular local customers speaks volumes! Food is served all day, and a choice of café or takeaway service is offered. The café is fully licensed, and you can choose to eat inside or outside.

Breakfast, lunch and evening meals are all on the menu.

The fish and chips here are renowned: often you can choose from fresh  Hapuka, Gurnard and Blue Nose. In addition a wide range of both sweet and savoury cabinet food is available-all very tasty, freshly made on the premises It is fair to say that The Deck is more than just a café. A small range of basic convenience foods, cigarettes, and newspapers are always available.

Fishermen will be interested to know that baits are sold here, and you can even arrange a charter! The owners, Kerry and Marlene are fishing enthusiasts and can provide valuable advice to visitors.
